This evening Penny was preparing to get out of bed and said “I want to walk to the big crunchy granola.” It took a bit to work out what she really wanted: to sit on the big comfy couch.
We did get up to use the bedside commode, but we did not walk to the sofa. By the time she had used the commode, Penny was more than ready to get back into the bed, and moments later she was asleep. It would have been pretty difficult to move the 10 feet from the bed to the sofa, and she probably would not have found it as comfortable as she remembers. Earlier in the week, Penny walked with assistance to sit on the sofa and was pretty quickly uncomfortable. Today, she isn’t so much taking a couple steps from the bed to the commode as I am lifting her from the bed to the commode.
Today also marked the first day that Penny expressed no interest in food – unless you count the crunchy granola. This is something we were told to expect, but it was a pretty abrupt change from yesterday.
She had a fever again in the night and was a bit restless from 4am to 6am. But since getting the fever under control, she mostly slept peacefully the rest of the day. Starting yesterday we have switched to administering Oxycodone and Ativan on a schedule rather than as needed. The hope is that this will help us get ahead of some of the painful/restless periods she has been having lately.
What little conversation Penny had today was of the crunchy granola type. Context clues and some follow up questions usually allow me to figure out what she’s saying. One we didn’t figure out was her insistence that she needed to “make iron coffee with her pants”.
