Back in the ER

Each Monday recently our visiting nurse Claire has come to check on things.  Today she also drew blood.

Early this evening we received a call from the doctor's office asking us to go the the ER because the blood work showed that Penny's calcium was "critically low".  The hope was that she could go to the ER, get an infusion and be back home in time for bed.

At the ER additional blood work revealed additional issues.  Apparently low magnesium is the biggest imbalance. There seemed to be a little surprise that Penny hasn't been experience more symptoms related to the electrolyte imbalances.  (Lots of questions about muscle cramps, seizures, confusion and memory issues, heart issues, etc. so we gather those are the symptoms one could have with these sorts of imbalances.)  Penny hasn't felt great the last couple days, but she hasn't had any of these dramatic symptoms.

She is receiving both magnesium and calcium now, and should be admitted in the next 15-30 minutes.  She's being admitted because (1) her levels are so low, she will likely need multiple infusions, and they will want to do additional blood tests to see how things are changing; (2) there are some heart-related risks they need to monitor as they readjust the electrolytes, and (3) it will give them some more time to investigate possible causes of the electrolyte imbalances.

So we'll be here at least over night, but it could be longer depending on how things go.
