Today was the official end of the second clinical trial. This involved an echocardiogram, an ekg, blood work, and a conversation with Dr. Lakhani. We added hydration for good measure.
Everyone at the clinic noticed that Penny looked much better than she has recently. The last 48 hours have been the best 48 hours since sometime in July. Although Penny’s weight was down some since the last visit to the clinic, she has eaten much better the last couple days and has had some more energy. As she put it, she has enough energy to be annoyed that she doesn’t have more, which is better than not having enough energy to care that you don’t have energy.
It’s hard to know what the underlying causes are, but likely at least part of the recent improvement is getting the infection under control. We don’t really know just how long the infection was there or how much of the recent symptoms have been due to that. But we’re hoping the recent trend continues and that Penny can regain some strength as she eats and feels better.
Longer term, Dr Lakhani has his eyes on three clinical trials. None of them is taking patients at the moment, but it is possible one or more of them could begin doing so sometime between now and Christmas.
Until then, we just work on building back some strength so there is some reserve for the next treatment and enjoy the benefits of feeling better.
