Yesterday we met again with our oncologist and decided to discontinue the current trial. Based on Penny’s experience and the results from others in the trial, it seems unlikely that the current drug formulation will be effective.
The plan is to spend a couple weeks trying to recover from the last several and then to see what options there might be. Typically when switching trials there needs to be a “wash out”, period between them to make sure that the pervious drug is out of your system before introducing a new one, so this break in treatment serves that purpose as well.
There has already been noticeable improvement since Monday. Everyone at the clinic commented on how much better she looked. The swelling in Penny’s legs is gone, and she’s been eating better the last couple days. But she still needs to regain some weight and strength (stairs are challenging and hand rails essential, for example). White blood cell counts are getting close to normal, and the other blood work looks good. No nausea of late, and much less pain. So lots of progress, but more needed.
Next up: a good breakfast. Doctor’s orders.
