The day ended up being even longer than we expected.
Mid-afternoon we learned that Penny was to be the first patient in Grand Rapids in Part 2 of the study. This means that she gets to skip the lead-in phase and received both drugs already today. Had this been Part 1, she would have received only the main study drug for three weeks before getting to the main part of the study with the 2-drug combo administered every three weeks.
It also meant a longer observation period at the clinic. About 9.45 the ambulance finally came for the transport to the hospital for overnight observation.
The only noticeable side effect today was a low grade fever that went away with Tylenol. Penny slept a good chunk of the afternoon due to a large dose of Benadryl given as part of the “pre meds”. But for the most part she’s been feeling fine — definitely better than on a usual chemo day.
Tomorrow and Friday, she’ll check in at the clinic for labs and to check how things are going. But so far everyone seems pleased.
Now we just need to wait to see whether the treatment has any impact on the cancer.
